A Travellerspoint blog

After a remarkably unremarkable flight we arrived in Bangkok early on Wednesday morning. A taxi ride into the city allowed us to see most of the new skyscrapers that now dominate Bangkoks skyline and not least was the one that looks like someone had built it out of lego and lost half the parts.

The Holiday Inn that we chose seems a step up from their UK cousins but that could be down to the exotic setting, the incredible helpful staff and jetlag.

After settling in, Christine and I headed off out to explore.

We spent the afternoon at the Royal Palace where there was an event on in remembrance of the recently departed King. In addition to the normal throng of tourists it was packed with Thai people all dressed in black. It was a very impressive sight and made more so by the stunning beauty and architecture of the palace which is made up of various temples.

A ride on one of Bangkok's legendary taxi boats down the river took us back, eventually, to our hotel. I say eventually as Christine had left me to work out how to get us home from the water taxi and it turns out that there are two Holiday Inns in Bangkok.......

However dinner at a very modern Thai restuarant soon redressed the matter and tomorrow is another day - albeit there may be a replacement tour guide........
