Arrival in Saigon

After a very early start and a very fast drive to the airport we eventually arrived in Saigon (aka Ho Chi Minh City) around lunchtime. Our hotel is on the river front and close to the centre of town.

The most immediately noticeable thing is the huge number of scooters on the road. Apparently this is because it costs as much to tax a car annually as to buy it.

The scooters are used by whole families, Mum, Dad and a couple of small children all happily pile onto one. And if the roads are blocked - which they often are - then they just ride on the pavement!

The central area of Saigon is awash with decorations for the New Year. Some buildings are also lit up in quite elaborate ways. This makes walking down the street quite tricky, as you crane your neck up to look at the lights whilst keeping one eye on the path to avoid the speeding scooters! A great town and one I look forward to coming back to later in the trip.
